“Where you live shouldn’t determine whether you live”

So I am sure you all have at least heard of Kony 2012.  The power of social media has struck again, #stopkony12 was trending worldwide on Twitter last night and Facebook has been blowing up about the story of Joseph Kony.  For those of you who do not know, there is this documentary which is going viral about a movement to stop a man by the name of Joseph Kony.  Kony is the leader of the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) who was originally stationed in Uganda.  He is the leader of this rebel group who has abducted, corrupted and transformed children into ruthless killers.  This movie, made by Jason Russell, one of the creators of Invisible Children, aims to show the world the atrocities going on around them.  As he states “99% of the planet doesn’t know who this man is”, this is where we need to come in.

Now I thought to myself before viewing the movie, why now? Why is it that Joseph Kony and this movie are getting so much attention when there are people like Kony all over the globe corrupting children, but they get no attention.  I wanted to know what made this case so special; why is it that this is where me make our stand instead of the hundreds of times before when news like this broke.  Now, after watching the film I understand that he identical to the others who have been found to be committing these war crimes and I sincerely hope this is when we as a public decide that enough is enough.

Some of these children believe it is in fact better to die than stay here on Earth and face the threats of Kony.

Let’s make our stand and make an effort to stop Joseph Kony.  At the very least, watch the film and see how you feel about the situation.  If you are affected in the same way I was, you will choose to be proactive.  We need to find a way to stop Kony and the others like him in the world. I could certainly write for days on this subject and about the people like Kony in the world, but the bottom line is that this man needs to be stopped.

What can we do? What is it that we the American public can do to stop a man as powerful as Kony?  Is this something the government should be taking a stand on?
