Only one day after North Carolina passes Amendment One banning same sex marriage or civil unions, President Obama took a firm stance on the issue. He had previously stated that his opinion on gay marriage was ‘evolving’ after remarks by were made by Vice President Biden in explicit support of it. Today his evolution was complete as he said with confidence in an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, “for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”- There you have it folks, Obama is now in Biden’s camp in support of gay marriage. Prior to this statement President Obama had said that he thought civil unions were enough since the word marriage evoked very powerful traditions and religious beliefs. Though he now supports it, it is not clear how far his support will extend. Nonetheless, this is a symbolic achievement for same-sex couples everywhere.

You be the judge, did Obama’s remarks really do anything? (Good or Bad)

Was it purely a political move to deviate from the clear stance that Republicans have taken on the issue?
