Over 50 gas stations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania have jacked up their gas prices today to more than $8.00 a gallon. I know gas prices have been high all summer, but why the extreme hike?

In short: gas stations are protesting what they claim are unfair pricing practices by Lukoil North America, saying that the company engages in practices that force franchisees to pay higher prices for their fuel than their competitors.

Lukoil is Russia’s second-largest oil producer, and there are over 500 Lukoil-branded stations in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Region.

Obviously, gas for over $8.00 a gallon is extremely expensive, even by today’s standards. Do you think this protest will be effective?
