Oprah’s done it, Justin Beiber’s done it, Kanye West’s done it, and now the Pope has done it. Yes, I am of course speaking of joining the tweeting world!  Today, Pope Benedict XVI tweeted his first tweet to followers all over the world.

“Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart” -@pontifex

But when you’re the Pope, you don’t just have one twitter. Pope Benedict has eight different twitter accounts, each in a different language: English, Italian, French, Spanish,  Arabic, Portuguese, Polish, and German.  With almost 1 million English followers, the Pope is taking the Twitter world with quite the entrance. By joining Twitter and other social media outlets like Facebook, The Vatican and whole Catholic Church are hoping to get in touch with more modern times.  With predominately younger members, the Twitter community is a place where the Pope can speak directly to followers.

What do you think–will you be following @pontifex?  Do you think he will be welcomed by most?  Is there backlash to come from critics?
