Angela_Merkel_(2008)

Hopefully you were busy this weekend showing your parents a good time – I know my mom got a little wild at the tailgate. BUT, there was a ton of news this weekend that you may have missed amidst all of the fun! Never fear, your PTB weekend wrap-up is here:

1. More than 60 people were killed and at least 150 were injured on Saturday in an attack on a high-end mall in Kenya. The Somali Islamist group al Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack. Kenyan forces have been struggling to to overtake the militants, who are holed up with military-grade weapons and seem willing to fight to the death.

2. An Egyptian court ordered the ban of the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as all organizations affiliated with or funded by the group. This is a dramatic escalation of the crackdown on supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, who was a member of the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood was outlawed for most of the 85 years it has existed.

3. Angela Merkel was re-elected the Chancellor of Germany by a shocking majority. Merkel is the only major European leader to have been elected twice since the euro zone’s fiscal crisis of 2008. Her win indicates a strong endorsement for her mix of austerity and solidarity in managing the crisis, in which she was a key player. She has been called the most important politician in Europe.

4. President and Mrs. Obama honored the deaths of the Navy Yard shooting victims yesterday. In his speech, President Obama lamented America’s resignation towards gun violence and reissued his call for change in gun control laws.
