Britney Spears. Pop star, X-factor judge, member of the Mickey Mouse Club…and figurehead in the fight against Somali pirates.

Wait, what was that last one?

Yes, it’s true. Captain Phillips could have saved himself a whole lot of trouble if he and his crew had only been listening to the sweet, sweet music of Britney Spears. The British Navy has been using the singer’s dulcet hits to scare off Somali pirates – because nothing is more intimidating than a rendition of “Oops! I Did it Again.”

Merchant naval officer Rachel Owens explained the tactics: “Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most. These guys can’t stand western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect. As soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney, they move on as quickly as they can.”
