Rapper M.I.A. (note – not a popstar) is finally back on the music scene with her fourth album, Matangi. While her last album, /\/\ /\ Y /\, was widely panned as too political – she semi-predicted the NSA scandal with 2010’s “The Message,” saying “Headbone connects to the headphones / Headphones connect to the iPhone/ iPhone connected to the Internet / Connected to the Google / Connected to the government” – Matangi plays out as a conceptual middle finger. This is M.I.A. doing what she does best: exploring her self in a world that prefers easily digested narratives.

Critics have had mixed feelings about the album: Buzzfeed is calling M.I.A. the most exciting artist around right now, while others are saying that her rhymes are played out, and that she seems to be unintentionally parodying herself.
